Today, the fire alarm went off in my dorm and I saw and smelled smoke coming under my door. My second story window wouldn't unlock so I broke it open, threw out as many of my belongings as I could, and jumped. Turns out, the smell and noise were from my roomates cheap vacuum cleaner, not a fire. FML

Seeing and smelling smoke is not a reason to jump from the second floor. You should remain near the floor with the door closed until the firemen arrive. If they don't arrive, and the fire is in your room, then its okay to jump. Before then, its just stupid

YDI for not using apostrophes (roommate's). I'm glad you took the time to throw your precious possessions out the window instead of checking your doorknob, and if it wasn't hot, seeing if your roommate was OK. If you would have done that, you would have seen the harmless nature of the situation and not revealed to the world what a cowardly, heartless, selfish bitch you really are in the crunch.

lol. didn't want to open the door and check?

That's one way to die if there really is a fire

How did she deserve it? When the fire alarm is going off and you see and smell smoke, you don't "go check" to see if there's actually a fire. And you especially don't wait around until firefighters get there to get out. Especially when the smoke is coming under your door. You get out fast. Didn't you learn that in like, elementary school fire safety? She is not a selfish bitch, she is someone who reacted quickly to something that could have been terrible.

Waiting on the floor for firemen to get you in a dorm with god knows how many rooms and how many students is a terrible idea. Jump. Good job. Buy your roommate a new vacuum. But don't replace the window.

YDI, in a fire, don't take anything you can't grab and carry with you on the way out the door. Also, your window is not your primary exit, should of touched the door to see if it was hot, then exited your room into the hall.

yes, wander down the hallway and if the exit down there is blocked by fire, hope to God that it hadn't reached your room yet and you can still escape out that window... sounds like a great idea.

I agree with #12 in regards to vacuuming in the hallway. How the **** was that working? Also, "Turns out the smell and noise were from my roommate's cheap vacuum cleaner, not a fire"... The only noise you described in the post was the fire alarm. Am I supposed to believe that a vacuum cleaner sounded like a fire alarm? You're either retarded or this might be fake.

honestly, i dont give a damn about my roomates when it comes to a fire. i dont know those girls and i would have hoped they were ok but when your neighborhood, or wherever u live (box, shelter, street corner etc.), catches on fire, u go be superman and save all your neighbors and get burt up in the process.

Good to know that you're just a selfish bitch, and care more about meaningless items than human lives, regardless of whether or not you know them. I hope you never become a firefighter. You're probably safer with an office job. I hope your office is on the ground floor, however, so that you don't break a leg trying to jump out the window when someone starts vacuuming.

OP that's cold, but I agree. If I see the smoke coming from under my door, hear the smoke detector/fire alarm or whatever, I'm gunna get the hell out of there because there's no way that you could save them in the real situation. With the fire right outside your door, you can't possibly 'save human lives' without running through the smoke or fire. If someone was in the room with you, though, I hope you would be helping them instead of trying to save your stuff. But tbh, the way you said 'i don't give a damn about my roommates when it comes to fire' makes you seem like a heartless bitch, and that they should be laughing at you right now.

Are we a wee bit judgmental, maybe? Also: it's not necessarily a good idea trying to save people from a fire, if you have neither the training nor the equipment. The result could very well be that the firefighters end up having one more person to rescue. If they have passed out from the smoke, what do you do - go in there and pass out, too? If they are trapped by the fire, what do you do - jump through the fire and get burned, so you can be trapped, too? Or do you shout to alert people? Better shout pretty loudly then, so they can hear you over the smoke detector blaring...

Erm, durrh? At least check to see if they're all right instead of saving possessions first.

#1: i hope u dont think i care what u believe #2: our fire alarms sound like tornado sirens because the university isnt done working on them yet #3: i live in a dorm with football players who microwave easy mac before putting the water in and idiots who burn popcorn every day, so a fire was bound to happen someday

I......how do you manage to mess up something with 3 simple instructions? Anyway, I would have called out to my roommate to see if s/he were there/okay before jumping. If there is smoke between the two of you you cant rescue them, but you can tell the firefighters they need rescuing. Other then that, you did pretty okay.
