Today, while giving my final speech, a bump that had been growing on my arm popped. Pus leaked through my white dress sleeve, and it smelled like death. Everyone noticed. FML

I'm sorry to hear that. Maybe next time check with a doctor to get it removed beforehand or try popping it at home. :/

It doesn't take that large of an abscess to smell up a room. When we would lance one in the ER you could smell it a few rooms in either direction, and the smell is very putrid

If it was big and "mature" enough to smell like that you should have gone to a doctor. YDI that's so gross OP

There's nothing here to suggest that she didn't go to a doctor. My Dad had an abscess on his back and he went to the doctor about it at least 4 times over the course of a couple of years, and they always said the same thing "if it's not painful and it's not bothering you just leave it". Eventually after it got a bit bigger he mentioned it again and the doctor removed it, and he said the smell was awful. Although Abscesses are caused by bacterial infections, so the pus will smell no matter how 'mature' it is, so i really don't see how you've come to the conclusion that OP deserved for this to happen...

What's with all the YDI's? Who all goes to a doctor for something that probably looked like a zit? Sheesh.

Some people do, but it's more than likely because they have a history with abscesses. It may look like a zit at first, but sadly it's not. I don't blame OP for not going though, she probably didn't realize what it was, which sucks majorly.
