Today, while looking in the mirror at my full-blown grease-spewing acne-riddled face, my father came up behind me and said, "Don't worry son, I had acne like that when I was your age". I replied, "No you didn't", and his immediate response while laughing was, "No, I didn't." FML

It's ok OP. having acne at this age means you wont have it later in life, when it's probably more important. Also, that was interestingly descriptive o.o

Accutane saved my life, for what it's worth. But your dad is a dick. Severe acne is not something to laugh about. Good luck, OP.

#30...sorry, but I don't think Accutane is worth the risk. But I'm glad it worked for you. I'm a Pharm Tech and I would NEVER let my child take that drug, we would have to do something safer.

Acne is not a disease, it's a symptom. It can be caused by hormones, poor diet, inflammatory conditions, makeup or other topical creams, etc. It's different for everyone. If your acne is that severe, it's definitely a sign of something not being right in your body. The smart way to go about it is to find and take care of the root of the problem, so your skin can heal itself, not try to burn/dry/kill off the symptom. Acne is already damaged, inflamed skin. Why would we want to remedy it by damaging it even more?

I knew about the side effects, and would do it again. My face went from being covered in painful systic acne to perfectly clear. Nothing else helped in the slightest before that, and my dermatologist tried everything she could before recommending accutane. I was very much informed. But, to each his own. All I know is that I've had great skin ever since, and it's been 6 years.

Same story here!! I knew all the risks. But it was well worth it! That was five years ago!

Don't worry OP. Your dad's a jerk. Your skin should get better in a few years. If it's really bad I suggest using accutane, but then again it comes with a lot of side effects... Whatever you do don't use proactiv because your skin will depend on that for a long time so when you stop using it, your skin will go back to the way it used to be. I suggest Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay, that stuff works wonders for me. Drink lots of water too though!

I know it seems like your Dad was being mean to you, OP. But he was just trying to make you feel better. Acne problems really suck. But you'll probably grow out of it and you'll be better looking than ever! WOO-HOO! ;D Just keep your skin clean, don't be touchin on your face, eat healthy, not greasy, food, and do NOT pop your zits! You'll feel much better about your looks and yourself. ;)

And for all of the Trolls, I saw that it says his Dad was laughing while he responded, but that doesn't mean he was making fun of him. It could mean that he laughed because his son caught him lying and couldn't come up with a better answer. He was just trying to make him feel better. I've been caught in that before. It'll throw you off a little bit when your sympathetic white lie gets turned on you. Once again, he was probably just trying to make his son feel better about his acne problem. :) It was a good try. :)

actually greasy foods have nothing to do with acne. its your oil glands that determine whether or not you get acne. also washing it a lot dries your skin out which could make it worse. talk to your doc or see a dermatologist or both. being in canada's awesome cause all this stuff is pretty much free :)

Yeah. Washing your face alot will dry out your skin. That's why I said to just keep it clean by washing your face twice a day. And always use moisturizer! Moisturizer is a must for people with acne. :) Also, your diet does affect your acne more than most people think. Keeping a healthy diet reduces the amount of oils and bad bacteria in your body. I know that alot of people have severe acne problems and it's almost impossible to get rid of acne. But a good, healthy diet does help! :) And, believe it or not, chocolate is a good thing to eat. It's good for everyone, but especially people with acne. Chocolate has a very strong hormone called Gherlin in it that is a really strong stress reducer. About 95% of people with acne have it because of stress, no matter what the stress is from. Physical, emotional, and sexual stress will cause acne. It just depends on ones complexion how bad the acne will get. So eat chocolate! It tastes good! And it's good for you! :)

Desireev, I agree with you about diet having a huge role in acne, but I need to point out that what works for one person may not work for another. It depends on how the individual's body reacts to each method of treatment, and what the cause for them was to begin with. For me, sugar of any kind except fruit and saturated fats were a monster, regardless of what food they were in. What saved me was avoiding sugar and eating more good fats with Omega-3 acids. They not only reduce inflammation, help hormone regulations, but they also help your skin moisturize itself without being overly oily. Now I rarely need to put anything on my face at all.

Yes that is true. That's why I pointed out that alot of other people have acne that is almost impossible to get rid of. The father of my son has an acne disease and it is literally impossible for him to get rid of it. It's really a sad deal. No matter what he does, he can't get rid of it. I just can not even imagine what that is like. :(

if its that bad, go to your doc for a prescription for medication. it'll clear right up.

Your dad is a jerk! Parents are suppose to help their kids with their problems, not kick them when they're down. Hopefully your mom's more supportive and can help solve your skin problems. There are many things in the market now a days that can help. (:

Don't feel bad OP. Mine was pretty bad for a while but I kept cleaning it and it went away. Just part of puberty.

Speaking of Proactiv, the infomercial w/ Judith Light gives me a rise in my Levi's!
