Today, I was in the bank with my seven year-old daughter, when I saw an old high school friend of mine with his wife. I said hello, and he commented on how beautiful my little girl was. I thanked him, and as I turned away, I heard his wife say, "I guess the father must be the good looking one." FML

Today, my husband and I ran into his high school girlfriend at the mall. We were catching up and my husband told her that we have a daughter. She asked what our daughter's name, but my husband hesitated and tried to change the subject, so I told her it was Juniper. That was her name. FML

Today, I had to go to the mall for a quick errand. While there one of my friends who works at a phone booth was there and I stayed for a little bit chatting with him. While chatting, a girl passed by. She was so pretty that I blurted out, "What a woman!" out loud. Turns out it was my ex. FML

Today, I ran into my girlfriend by chance while out shopping. She looked different than usual. Maybe it was the wedding ring she was wearing, or how she had her arm around another gentleman, gee, I don't know. That's two years of my life wasted. FML

Saying "the one that got away" implies that you still have strong romantic feelings for the person, so much so that they are most likely stronger than what he feels for his wife. Not just an ex, but The One that got away.

Your wife doesn't know that she's the one who got away, your daughter neither! why you decided to torture yourself is a mystery to me but stop thinking you hurt someone, (except yourself for no valid reason) it was a silly coincidence, someone you knew at some point of time was called that way too, and you didn't think about her in ages, even forgot she existed, the odds that you pick a name together that belongs to someone you might have known some point of time in your life are large enough to put it off as nothing
