Today, I asked my girlfriend's father if I could marry his daughter. He smiled, shook my hand, and said "No. Now get out of my house." FML

At which point you turn around, say "Thankyou for your advice...." and you marry her anyway.

Propose in spite of him. In front of him would be better. When she hugs you out of sheer joy, make the devil horns and wiggle your tongue at her dad.

Honestly, if a guy were ever to fall in that much love with me, then I guess I would want him to ask me first, instead of my dad. Ladies have their own opinions, and most of us will make them very well known. I know I do. I have no intention of getting married, so yeah, no biggie.

Well of course, you have to ask the permission of the woman you are going to marry as well...

my now father-in-law said no the first time I asked him, but my mother-in-law made him change his mind.

Marry her anyways, her father can't stop you >:D

Shouldn't have asked HIM. If you loved her marry her anyway. It's not like you'd be marrying the dad, so it's not his decision. What my parents did is call my mom's parents and TOLD them "We have made a decision. We're getting married." In the modern world, if you ask the parent, it makes you seem unsure anyway.

TIJD, very well-reasoned response. I personally agree with 43, though. I'm close to my family, but nobody has to live with the would-be husband except me, so it no one else's business, and considering my dad's opinion before my own would be an insult to me and get that guy's ass kicked to the curb! of course I also don't want am engagement ring and think the boyfriend should change his name to mine if we ever get married. feminism ftw!

ydi for not talking to your girlfriend first. my dad would have said, "I don't know. did you ask her?"

Maybe he thought you were talking about his other daughter.
