Surely if it was 'urgent' it wouldn't have been scheduled months in advance... ?
Really? You've never heard of needing to book in advance? Most specialists are so booked up, that it takes weeks or months just to get an appointment with them. And an 'urgent' medical situation doesn't necessarily mean the person should be in the Emergency Room. Generally, if you need a specialist, it means your problem is 'urgent' to an extent...whether it be cancer screening, heart problems, or even something as small as needing your teeth pulled.
It's a doggie dog world.
I would've walked.
That's against the law to make someone stay late.
Its against the law to make someone stay late with out pay. Some places pay overtime when you work more than 8hrs in one day. Most other places pay it when you work more than a 40 hr in a work week. So there might be benefit of OP staying.
Awwwww, puppies!
Did you manager pay you for that? Otherwise she's in pretty big trouble.
Hey that's a legit reason !! Puppies are magical
I'm surprised that nobody mentioned the fact that OP's going to have to pay for the missed appointment. Doctor's offices, especially the specialist ones, usually charge you if you don't reschedule at least a day before hand. Insurance won't cover it, so OP will have to pay full price for the missed visit, probably somewhere between 80-120 because it's a specialist. So, not only will OP have to wait several more weeks to get back in with her doctor, she'll be paying a great deal of money, all because her manager wanted to go stress out some poor dog in labor. When an animal is in labor you leave her the **** alone. OP's manager is a thoughtless prick for thinking it's okay to go there. Actually, I kind of hate the manager's neighbor, who seems to think it's okay to call up all of her friends and say, "OMG, Sally's in labor, there's like puppies coming out her, you gotta come see this!". It's wrong to call up all your neighbors and invite them over to watch and terrorize her.
It's the same with humans though, and nobody realizes that. The whole family wants to be in the delivery room to see the baby born. You know what I wanted while in labor? For everyone to get the **** out and leave me alone. So yeah, I definitely understand what you're saying, and it was terrible of the neighbor to allow people to witness her dog's stressful and painful labor. Sure, come over after the puppies are born and the mom is settled and comfortable but leave her the hell alone during the process of giving birth! It's stressful enough without the audience.
My sister had a baby three weeks ago and this was the exact situation. She was in tremendous pain, her husband was sick in the next room because he cannot handle blood, and she asked me to stay with her. We are rather close, so this is not a surprise. I however stayed next to her hand and gave her water when she needed it. My mom, grandmother, and female cousin (Becky) all tried to force their way in. Becky convinced the nurse to let her in claiming she was "the other sister" and was in the doctor's way trying to see the baby come out of the ******. I have never seen someone scream so loud at someone. Becky was not allowed to be around after that because she made my sister want to choke her with the umbilical chord. People can be so selfish.
97- I am a Midwife (in Australia), and people like your cousin make me want to scream! It's also the reason why I will not let anyone film any babies I am delivering, after being told once to move out of the way once so that someone could get a better camera angle.
Unfortunately in some places in Australia, particularly remote areas, it can take months to see a Specialist if the condition is not life threatening. I would also guess that when they made that appointment it was the first one available. And the definition of Urgent differers for different people and conditions. For example, my friend had to wait for 3 months to see a Specialist to then have to wait another 3 months for the surgery on a joint that was causing extreme and constant pain. Not life threatening but she considered it urgent when looking at how long it would take to get the condition fixed.
y dont you report ur manager than? not like u could leave for a reason like that. thats an abuse of power. also they cant keep you at work if you have an appointment like that.
