By themildthings - This FML is from back in 2010 but it's good stuff - Germany

Today, whilst working as a language assistant in Germany as part of my degree, some 9 year-old German kids asked me to please speak English to them because my German was so shit. FML

Face it, a German degree from the University of Phoenix isn't going to get you far anyways. They should have sent you to a place where you could dazzle them with your mad German skillz, like Antarctica. Penguins love guttural languages.

I see you have trouble with my native language: sarcasm. I recommend you hire Trollz as a tutor. organisedchaos is probably more fluent, but he believes in the full immersion method, which is rough for the newbie's self-esteem. Besides, Trollz accepts acacia as payment.

I'm never sarcastic. I have no clue what she is talking about. Everything about me, including my username, is 100% business, 100% of the time. That's how you spell SUCCESS!

i've had the same type of thing where they just switch to english because they hear an english accent. so difficult to speak german unless you speak perfectly.

They barely understand eachother if they're from different regions. Probably don't want to burden themselves with yet another accent. OP, you should try Berlin or Hannover. Friendlier towards textbook German. Deutsch ist der Teufel!

That's not true. Germans are very tolerant and understanding towards people with a foreign accent. You don't have to speak the language perfectly. The only option is that OP's German REALLY sucked :P

At least we usually don't refuse to at least try communicating with people who don't speak German well enough and since there are really a lot of people who speak English it seldom gets too difficult... I suppose it is also easier to learn English if German is your mother tongue than the other way 'round... But it's actually not so bad concerning the different dialects. As long as you are not in some tiny village in the "Bavarian highlands" (;)) or the likes, basically everyone is able to speak standard/High German even if takes a little bit of effort.

actually most Germans who come from other areas have trouble understanding each other because of their accents so maybe OPs accent made it hard to understand my German teacher always pronounced things differently because of where in Germany he was from

Don't say stuff like that unless you are a German and have experience with it. I am German and while it is difficult to understand some accents most German people can actually speak the "normal" German with a bit of effort

ROTFLMAO -- Hey, hang in there. You will get it. Immersion is the only real way to make it happen.

Mr Gorbachev tear down this wall tear it down Reagan smash Reagan smash

I know three languages... can fluently speak and write, understand and be understood... but the accent is the thing which smts let me down..op you may learn German all your life and have the communication problem...ydi

there goes your confidence of attaining fluent german..... FYL
