You earned it

Today, I had to go claim benefits for the first time since working and paying taxes from the age of 16. I’m 50. They offered me an emergency payment of £1200, and I said no because I was too embarrassed to accept “charity.” FML

Remember what they say about pride and falling. This is the perfect example. It is not something to be embarrassed over as it is a safety net for just such eventualities.

You do know for the past 34 years you’ve been paying taxes partly to support others down on their luck? Well, your luck has turned sour, so you should gratefully accept a little help this time.

huh? this makes no sense. why did you bother going for benefits and then refuse them? not to be rude but that's not a smart move. ydi

this kind of pride is ******* stupid

you sound like a hard-working guy. After 34 years of paying into the system for other people to use it, you totally should have accepted it. I don't like accepting charity either, but your taxes help to pay for it.

I can understand. You have been making it on your own since you were 16. No handouts. But when times get rough, a little help can go a long way

Good. Suffer under your own stubbornness.
