Change the locks

Today, my 81-year-old mother threw out the packaging for a 3-day-old $1,700 monitor I was going to return due to a defect. I live in my own home, but she randomly visits to "clean up" without asking me. Now I'm stuck with an expensive, defective monitor. FML

Get smart. Go buy another one. Take the packaging from that one, Return the defective one in the new packaging with the new receipt angrily demanding your money back for selling such crap for that amount of money. Problem solved.

Change you locks! Make sure your mom never gets in again without your being there. While I sympathize with the loss to OP - This was entirely preventable had he established boundaries a long time ago.

You don't need the packaging! Under Australian Consumer law you are entitled to a repair, replacement, or refund if you are sold a faulty product, and you do NOT have to return a product in its original packaging. https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/consumer-rights-guarantees/repair-replace-refund

Agreed. Regular return procedures apply to regular quality items. If it is defective, it doesn't matter if you no longer have the packaging, or if the item is something you would normally not be able to return. I once got my money back for an item from a store whose policy is 'no exchanges, no refunds, all sales final'. They told me they were doing it 'as a favour', but the truth is they are legally obligated to refund defective merchandise regardless of their policy.

Tell her she needs to pay for it...

Change your locks Mate, problem solved, plus why is she cleaning your house? If she’s 81, you’re what, 60+?

Change the locks? Ask for your keys back?

I feel like if you spend more time with her, she wouldn't feel the need to come into your home just to feel your presence. I think she just misses her baby boy.

So? Invest 30 bucks and change the locks!!!

Next time, do your own cleaning. If your mum is 81, then you're at least in your 50s? But if you have a valid reason to not do your cleaning then I apologise.

why does she even have a key to your place? get it back from her and tell her she cant come over unless you're home. simple.

lock yiur door take away her key. solves future problems

$1700 for what amounts to, what, probably 40-50 years of free cleaning. That's less than a dollar a week. You're getting off cheap. She's 81. She won't be around much longer. Change your locks if you like but be polite about it. Also keep in mind if you hire a cleaning service they're also likely to throw away bulky packaging items if you ding specify to keep them.
