I ended up failing my first permit test from the wrong book too. In my case, my school gave me the book for 18+ year olds rather than the one for minors. When I took the test, I didn't see as many questions about signs, markings, etc.; I saw TONS of specific questions about drugs, drinking underage, etc. I guess it was more important to make sure teens knew how to drink and drive rather than just drive.
You don't need to read the whole book, and you definitely don't need to prepare months in advance. I read like half of it twice and I passed.

That seems like a pretty obvious thing to notice when studying, if nothing else a 40+ year old book would not look modern even in the slightest. Your own fault OP sorry to say.
And you still passed because it's all common sense BS that any idiot can do, right? Maybe not given that you couldn't tell a book from the 70's from one today....
