I would try to put it back and band aid it down.

I've now lost two finger nails (first was in first grade - made Megan throw up cause of the blood). & one toe nail. Becky's nail. Becky being the name of my big toe on my left foot. she's special, cause she has no knuckle. we luv Becky. <3

When I was about 8 years old I was running to the back door to meet my dad and there was melted snow on the floor and my toe slipped under the edge of the door and ripped the toenail back. We bandaged it up, taping it down, maybe ice? (I was 8, I don’t remember), and kept it wrapped to prevent me from accidentally ripping it off. Since I was so young, I don’t remember all the details, but you just keep it trimmed as it grows back, and the new nail will push the old off your toe. My toenail is perfectly fine, and I’m 36.

Always wear shoes when doing heavy work.
