Today, my five year-old daughter came up to me and asked, "Mom, why are we so poor?" I replied, in a sweet motherly tone, "Honey, we're not poor." She then asked, "Then why do you dress like we are poor?" FML

ouch, she's starting off early. i only started questioning if we were poor when i was 15. and we are, but really it doesn't matter. show your kid there are better things in life than money.

A five year old is very unlikely to be able to distinguish between how rich and poor people dress - unless you actually have holes in your clothes, I guess. However, a good answer to questions like that is always "Nobody can have everything that they want so if I spent all my money on the most expensive clothes then we would have less to buy nice things for you".

My grandma told me that when my aunt was little she asked her "Are we poor"? When my grandparents were teens college wasn't that big of a deal. My grandpa fixed telephone wires while my grandma had different jobs.
