Considerate

By Anonymous - 21/08/2009 14:20 - United States

Today, my mother told me she's disappointed in me for not going to a better college, and that if I was in the top ten of my class that the rest of those ten must be really dumb. Fact is, I threw away the acceptance letters to Carnegie Mellon and Cornell because I didn't want her to have to pay. FML

YDI for not talking to your mom and throwing them away. If you can't afford it, there's always financial aid...

For the top ten of you're class you are an absolute idiot. Cornell and C-M both have crazy FA packages.

Don't be such jerks, she was trying to be considerate. But yeah, YDI for not talking to her.

exactly! she was trying to be considerate. and honestly, i think you're a good daughter for doing that. because there's no point in going in to debt when you can go to a slightly less ranked college that is cheap. and for everyone screaming financial aid...did you think that maybe she was over the limit of being qualified but still didn't want her mother paying for it? just because you don't want to spend your life savings on college doesn't mean you're poor. so STFU! and with the less ranked college, she probably got a merit scholarship anyway. besides she's obviously talking undergrad. it's not a big deal. still, i think your mother would have understood. but i can't blame you for not telling her.

You know, if the OP really wants to be considerate, she should just kill herself right now. Imagine how much money she'd save her mother in food bills alone. OP, YDI, you have no common sense.

Remember, you're F'd up like you are because of her. It's all coming full circle to F.HER.Life. She obviously didn't raise you with good analytical or logic skills. The communication between you is fractured at best, which is probably due to other festering issues.... She can spend the $$ you're saving her on cat food and bingo.

you should have at least told her. because now your mom has to feel like crap knowing her kid was smart enough for a great education and was to embarrased to talk to her mom about her financial state. YDI for not giving your mom the benefit of the doubt.

I see you didn't mind her paying the $100 application fees though...

Ever thought that maybe the OP has a part time job or something? And they paid for there own application fee's. You're a jerk.

What's with this crazy sense of entitlement? *make* her pay? Why? How?

OMGitsKaleyxo 0

well if u were top 10 wouldnt u have gotten at least a scholarship or something? and shes supposed to pay its college.

ozymandias_fml 0

"Supposed to pay"? Unless you are talking the *student*, then no, she is not. Who expects someone else to give them a free ride to college?

You're overlooking financial aid. If your family can only pay $5000 a year, that's all you'll have to pay at a school with good financial aid. You'll be 20-30k in debt at most.

That was supposed to be a reply to a different comment. Not sure how it ended up here.

What the hell is this shit. Observe kids, this proves that book sense is not a substitute for common sense.

Just because you threw away the letters doesn't affect the fact that you were accepted, unless this is total bullshit, which it almost certainly is. They will send you new letters if you call them. You obviously missed the deadline, but applications for expensive schools are way down so they will probably reconsider you for the coming year. If this is true, you have at least admitted that you ****** up and so you can start to put your life together. But really, you need counseling more than college at this point.

False. Applications were up for the class of 2013 at schools with big endowments, because word got out about FA programs. Those schools probably had ample wait-lists to turn to. The OP could probably still transfer in, though.

Hmm, you are correct. http://www.hernandezcollegeconsulting.com/ivy-league-admissions-statistics/ I must have mis-read something.

have you HEARD of financial aid?
