Today, my parents threw a hissy fit calling me ungrateful and disrespectful for wanting to do laundry and clean at home, instead of going out to their friends' house for dinner. They also disconnected the Internet to punish me when they left. I'm 20 and visiting home on a college break. FML

Could be worse. I'm 21 live at home still but work 50 hours a week while going to school full time. Both my parents are unemployed and sit on their asses playing their laptops while screaming at me to clean when I need sleep.

Denying, or more specifically retracting, a dinner invitation may be seen as disrespectful. I think I need more details

So, go to the dinner and then do your laundry afterwards. On college student time. You know, 11 pm, 2 am, etc.

You are such an ungrateful little bitch for volunteering to miss out on good food and fun to help out around the house! Wow man you are a self-centered dick!

How dare you take responsibility for yourself and do something productive with your time! You're grounded for 20 years. No chores, no cleaning and no organizing.

Their reaction was ridiculous but they were probably looking forward to showing you off at their friends place and are worried that they will have nothing to talk about otherwise.

My parents would be the one asking me to stay home and clean lol

What if they were planning the dinner in your honor? What if there was a surprise guest there that you haven't seen in a while? So they wanted to spend time with you and brag to their friends. You sound like a whiny brat.

..... this doesnt sound like the whole story. if you calmy said that you just want to stay home and clean up a bit NOBODY would go from 0 to 100 over that. it was probably the way you said it. be mindful of your attitude and body language next time

Unless OP's parents are like mine, who freak out literally over NOTHING (I am mindful of my tone and body language) when I'm just trying to talk to them or get a point across. They don't treat me like I'm almost 20, they don't respect me enough to have mature conversations with me, and I'm fed up with how they treat me, to the point where I don't even want to be in the same house as them. OP's parents could easily be the same.

To let you know that was their way of saying that they want to spend time with you and were pissed. They are probably proud of you and want to show you off.
