Curb your expectations

By Academia - This FML is from back in 2011 but it's good stuff - United Kingdom

Today, I got accepted into University, onto a course I don't want to do, but my parents said they would disown me if I didn't go. I believe them, since they haven't spoken to my shop assistant sister in about three years now. FML

Don't listen to your parents. Just do what you want in life. It's your life, not theirs.

Let them be stupid. They'll regret it when they don't have any kids who come to see them or talk to them. They'll just come crawling back one day, and u can tell them they did it to themselves

Go. Spend a semester taking classes that can go towards any major (I don't know if that school has general education requirements or not, but if it does, this should be easy). After the first semester, switch majors to something you actually want to do. The school might object to you trying to switch majors before you get there, but once you're there, they don't really care. I don't know that I would advocate keeping it a secret from your parents, but if you do choose to do that, they have no legal access to your records or any information, since you're an adult, so it should be possible. You could also try talking to them, but I know that won't work for everyone. Some people just don't really care what other people want, even if it is their own kid.

Grow a set of testicles, or ovaries, and stand up to your parents. Tell them you have to live your life not the one they would have you live.

FML Mods: Please put a big, bright banner saying "OP = Original Poster" at the top of the site. Just so people wont comment with this anymore. PS: Make sure the banner is tasteful. No flashing, screaming etc. PPS: I was joking. Sorta.

Is your parents "deshi"? I mean having typical indian parents I feel your pain... My parents still can't accept my husband just because he is not of their choice..!!

I am of the opinion this is a legitimate reason for disowning ones parents. I have a friend in this situation. She is not happy.
