How the heck did you determine it was the popular shelf, anyway? All of the creepy old guys perusing it?
Or feigned interest, as if you wanted to start reading manga, and asked your sister what she likes.
It would have helped if you had actually opened the books and had a peek at what was inside...
You fail for not looking at the goddamn book or finding out what series she likes. YDI. That would be like going to Blockbuster and grabbing the most popular movies for her. Most will probably be inappropriate.
aha good job :D i love japanese people
Normally, if a manga has that plastic wrapping, it's so kids can't read it in the store because it's ****. It's not there to protect the cover.
And if the plastic was gone you could have looked. I almost gave a kid one that had a nice cover but as you flip through, it's ****
YDI. Why wouldn't you look at it, first, to make sure it's appropriate? What I want to know is, why did so many people click 'fyl'?

I think you should have looked. That's what I would've done.
Everyone's gotta see naked girls sometime. But you could've [should've] asked a sales person if you've never bought Manga before. Or at least found one age appropriate. Sure you didn't get the color code, but you could always ask. Or flip through it. Or the old "ask her what her favorite is". At least you know she read it? I get books all the time when people are like, "Oh, you like fiction right? Here's these books about wizard-wannabes." I never read them.
