Today, I was telling my friends that I'd gotten a paid position to cover a worker's bereavement leave for the next three weeks. They then called me an insensitive bitch for "profiting from someone else's misfortune." FML

Nice friends you have there, OP. Just ignore them, it's your job so it's not their concern.

You're a good coworker to cover for someone for three weeks. Don't listen to your friends.

Then does that mean I shouldn't cover for my coworkers when they get sick, because I'll be "profiting from their illness?"

That's actually a really good way of explaining it to them. Same with a coworker going on vacation or maternity leave (don't you hate when people take advantage of a birth lol). Maybe if op explains it this way they can comprehend the situation?

#24 a lot of people refer to maternity leave as vacation. If only they knew...

The work needs to be covered if someone is out - regardless of it's because of vacation, illness or bereavement. A paycheck is always a good thing to have and your friends are way out of line.

Do they expect you to work for free because the person you are covering for had a loved on pass away?

Unless they're willing to pay your bills, they need to shut up

So this is what "friends" say to their friends... nice to know. So I guess I don't have any friends then :)

So because this person lost a loved one, nobody is supposed to do their job for three weeks? I mean, my condolences to your coworker, but somebody has to do the job!

If a person does not cause a bad thing, and then gets out of it a good thing, the good thing is actually bad? That's a weird "taint" theory your friends are advancing. Bad things happen all the time. We should not cause them; we should prevent them, but we sure as hell should get every benefit from them we can. If a few eggs have been broken anyway - make that goddamn omelette. Getting good from bad isn't disgraceful, it's being resourceful and making the world a better place instead of just solemnly contemplating its downsides.
