It has been my personal experience that sometimes when something is easy for someone and incredibly difficult for me, it is hard to learn from them. Either because they don't know how to explain it to me in a way that makes sense to me OR I'm too close to them to ask for help because I don't want to become nasty toward them when they're only trying to help. For example, my husband is a genius when it comes to chemistry, and lots of people ask for his help and want to be part of his study group; I on the other hand would be the last person to be in that study group - not because I don't want to learn, but I get too emotional when he's trying to explain things to me... mainly because I don't like feeling like I'm stupid in front of him... it's what he's good at and I'm terrible at it. And, we have learned that it goes the other direction as well, he wouldn't want to be study partner in psychology even though I lead several different study groups for the courses I'm in.
Some people prefer to learn things on their own and not ask for help.
They deserved to have failed. Sorry OP that they hurt your feelings in the process.

At least you offered! If they wanna fail, let them fail!
No, it means OP is intelligent in the mathematical field. However, you sound like a judgmental idiot.
