Well...I guess it would really have been better to have returned it sooner. But calling the cops on you does seem a bit harsh.
I hope it was a good read!
A few years ago I had to return a few books that I'd had since I was little. I was charged $60 for them. $100 and a police escort is a little steep for one book, in my opinion.
I keep books from the library all the time. They can only charge you the book's value no matter how long you kept it. You must have had a very expensive book to begin with.
#37, I don't know what kind of library you go to, but when I worked at one, we charged the entire cost of replacing the book which was more than the purchase price of the book. Also, we bought the editions with "library binding" that is more expensive than hardback. In most places, the library is not a good "try it before you buy it" bookstore.
I think you're correct. I once kept the "Sudoku for Dummies" book when I was first learning the game. I didn't want to return it because I wrote in it and did ALL the puzzles. :P The library charged me the $14.95 which was the price written on the book itself and I think it was just a few dollars more for them to order a new/replaced one. (Still worth it to me) I also kept a bunch of drink recipes books when I was first learning how to bartend. The library is my risk free bookstore! :P Unlike a regular bookstore, I've never been stuck with a book I didn't want to own :P
I've have, i'm not an English pro but that sounds wrong...
That's a story to tell the grand kids.

Well you kinda deserve it for having the book for so long...
At least you did the right thing in returning the book.
