Today, I was taken to the hospital after I fell down the stairs. The physician who saw me bit his lip and said he would have to amputate my foot, and I fainted in terror. One of the nurses later told me to "learn to take a damn joke." FML

Wow I get that it was a joke but that's horrible to scare someone like that

Being a doctor, he should know not to make such jokes. Not everyone takes them.

its good for a dr to have a since of humor, yes. but it's better while talking about something serious, that they just give it to you straight. TRUST ME!!!

Come on OP, you had.to know he was joking...

most doctors i see have a sense of humour like this too. but they dont say it in a serious voice

Why would a physician joke like that while looking at an injury. Seems to me they should learn the appropriate time to make a joke. Sorry, OP. At least he won't actually have to amputate it, right?

That's not even funny. That nurse shouldn't be in that field if she can't respect her patients.

If it was a relatively insignificant injury like an ankle sprain, that's a ******* hilarious joke. If the foot was hanging on by a tendon, it was neither a joke nor was it funny. I suspect the former.

Well, if they fell down the stairs they might be more than a bit out of it, I'd think. Assuming they actually fell DOWN the stairs, not just slipped.

That's really rude and unprofessional especially if it wasn't said in a joking tone. Sorry about all of this OP I wouldn't be too happy with that "joke" either and I have a great sense of humor

yeah, its only your foot, not your tities.

Somebody forgot to take their asshole antidote today. And to stay awake in class when they are covering spelling rules.

When your in pain and scared, I can understand OP's reaction. The doctor was seriously being unprofessional, even if he was just trying to make you feel better. The nurse on the other hand should rethink his/her occupation, because that is not a bedside manner appropriate in a hospital.

Coming from a healthcare professional who works in a trauma one hospital, I can tell that sometimes its important, for your own sanity, to inject humor into a situation. However, you also have to be able to tell who can take a joke like that and who might be too anxious for that kind of humor.
