He's kinda smart. He 'took' the bet (that actually doesn't exist) so that his roommate will eventually have to pay him the 10 bucks to stop this stupid bet (5 for the 'imaginary' guy who made up that bet, and 5 for himself). That way, he wins 10 bucks without doing anything. He's a genius!
