Today, my brother sent me an image by Skype, saying I really had to see it. I figured it was some kind of stupid joke, but I tried to look anyway. It wouldn't open. Turns out he thought he could just rename the ".exe" on a virus to ".jpg" and it would still run. My brother's a cretin. FML

If only the rest of the people who made viruses were as stupid as him.

A cretin? Isn't that what you call people from Crete? So if people leave Crete, does that make them excretions?

If he renamed it the file should still run and your brothers a genius, if he reformatted it he's a dumbass

No 18, it wouldn't. OP's computer sees a .jpg extension and will not execute an .exe extension. Please try to understand things before you comment. Or you look like the dumbass.

Actually, viruses are often disguised by a false extension. It could still be an executable file. It's a very common trick employed by virus engineers. When the person clicks on the file, it appears to do nothing, but is actually silently infecting the computer.

Google "How hackers disguise malicious programs with fake file extensions".

41/43 You're right but that's not just a matter of renaming the file as 18 suggests. It has to be engineered specifically for that purpose. All I was saying is renaming it will not work. By reading this FML, I doubt OP's brother has the skill to engineer the file that way.

Actually, some people do rename it, but since they have to leave the .exe in, it looks really obvious. For example: cutekitty.jpg.exe. The .jpg is there to fool people, but the .exe has to be left behind. Sadly people who are either really dumb or are not paying attention fall for it, but those of us who are more vigilant will notice it right away.

#65, some people have the known extensions set to not show. That is how they miss it.

52, that is probably true haha. I just wanted to warn the OP, in case they are assuming their brother did something dumb, when he's usually good with computers or something.

That's funny. A+ for effort I guess? Lol.

Phew, his ignorance saved you from getting a virus.

Ignorance and stupidity are two different things.

@ 23 Yet if you die from both due to a lack of knowledge, you aren't less dead from one then the other.

but he is ignorant of the correct proceedure for running a virus from a jpeg. he is also stupid for thinking it will work just by changing thr extension.

This really isn't even an fml, just a boring story.

Ugh! I hate when FML moderates a comment!

Send him a tinyurl to lemonparty.org, that'll learn him not to be a smart-ass ;-)

Guess you don't need enemies when you have family like that.

Fix it and send it back to him so it would work.

There is actually a Trojan going around Skype like that currently, although I've not seen it show up in .jpg format. Be careful, and as always, make sure your protection is up to date. And don't open stupid files. Stop opening stupid files.

Either he is really stupid for thinking that or he was just trolling you

.exe lol oh you poor windows users. This is why i have a mac.

SHAMUS_the_WITTY 18

I have a windows phone and a windows PC. You know, because I don't like buying a computer that's worth $400, and spending $1500 on it instead. But hey, some people like wasting money.

monnanon 13

mac has an equivelant tag for a executable file.
