you might have the basis for a lawsuit. there are a number of questions that are against the law to ask during a job interview. Asking about marital or relationship status is not allowed, and actionable. at the very least report it to his companies HR department. they might even offer you a job just to avoid a lawsuit.
I know that OP is from the US, so your point is completely valid, but as an interesting note, here in Germany, your employer needs to know your religion and marital status so they can pay you the right amount. Church tax is taken directly from your pay, and there is a variable scale for people depending on gender and marital status - a married man takes home more money than a single woman on the same pay scale. An atheist takes home more money than a Christian. Bizarre.
