Well, you are on a swim team. He likely planned on having you swim 50 laps, regardless. Saying it is punishment, especially unfair punishment, builds unit cohesion and motivates all of you through a common emotion (anger). That's why they do it in the military.

If that was hard you definitely aren't on a swim team because that is less than I have swam in one practice since I was 10

I would be delighted to be punished with 50 continuous laps. I swim competitively and I'm 13, and that sounds more like a treat to me than a punishment.
Anyone who thinks this is hard obviously isn't a swimmer. It's seriously a piece of cake. Your life isn't ****** up so don't act like it is.
