Health and wellbeing

Today, I scolded my son at a buffet after he pointed at an obese woman in a motorized wheelchair and asked how anyone could let themselves get so unhealthy. As I lectured him on genetics and thyroid problems, she rolled past with a plate stacked with an obscene amount of fried food. FML

well, most obesity issues are the result of an unhealthy lifestyle

Don't you hate it when reality rolls on by? It is polite to assume as you did but most likely it is their own fault and actually did let themselves go.

Don't defend those who don't wish to defend themselves.

I'm all for being proud of the way you're born (as an autistic, I kinda have to), but if you're choosing to an unhealthy lifestyle, that's nobody else's fault but yours

Unless McDonalds suddenly changed it's name to "thyroid issues," chances are she doesn't have thyroid issues.

Not everyone has a thyroid problem. Not everyone who has a thyroid problem gains weight, some lose weight, also it could be medications, but that lady just likes food lmao

I work at a grocery store and I have to tell you it's annoying to watch all the fat asses hog all our limited supply of riding cards when an elderly or injured person comes in and really needs it...most are over the weight capacity for those things; we have three broken already!

At least you're doing well by teaching your son not to judge people. Good on you, OP!

In any case, it's still none of your goddamn business what other people put into or do with their bodies. So, good on you for teaching your kid to not be a judgemental shit head.

while as a whole, the bulk of the fat-acceptance comments come from a good place, there is a line. as a fatty myself, the ones on motor scooters are deserving of your scorn. we all have a few extra pounds here and there, but if you keep shoveling in fried chicken at golden corral to the point where you're too lazy to even walk anymore, you deserve to have kids laugh at you in public.

Let's strap 400 pounds of weight to you and force you to walk everywhere and see how "lazy" you are. I bet you can't even make it from the computer to the door without collapsing in agony :D

Why should being fat and being treated like a human being be mutually exclusive things? It's not like them being fat is contagious and going to make you fat too. Do people like you just want to have a socially-acceptable target to bully, or what?

146 and 156, I think you're missing what 133 is saying. Let me tell you a story. My mom is disabled, and has a great deal of difficulty walking. She uses two canes when she goes out, simply because it's a hassle to bring her walker in the car with her. So, if she needs to go into a store like Walmart, those motorized scooters are a godsend. Now, picture this. I enter the store with my mother, and ask if she can have one of the scooters. The employee tells me that they're all in use at the moment, so we decide to sit on the benches by the door, and wait for one to be returned. When a woman does come and return the scooter, we see that she is heavily overweight. Now, I don't have a problem with this yet. My mom and I are both on the heavy side ourselves. We wait patiently for the scooter, and watch this woman hop off of it with ease, and walk back to her car faster than I normally walk. Now, I'm frustrated. We've waited nearly half an hour for a scooter to be returned by someone who didn't really need it. These are the kinds of people that 133 is talking about. Not the people who are literally incapable of walking on their own.

The SOLE cause of obesity is overeating. There is no such thing as diseases or genes that make you gain weight; you cannot make fat out of thin air. If you gain weight without eating, then you have some kind of superpower.

Your post ignores economic situations, stress (makes body think it needs to store food), depression (affects hunger variably), time (it's a lot harder to cook a good meal when you just got off an 8 hour shift at near-minimum wage), fatigue, pain, self-esteem, and so many other factors. But it's easier to feel superior to others when you don't have to think, isn't it?

Also meds are a super big one. Some SSRIs can cause like 50 pounds of weight gain!
