Health and wellbeing

Today, I scolded my son at a buffet after he pointed at an obese woman in a motorized wheelchair and asked how anyone could let themselves get so unhealthy. As I lectured him on genetics and thyroid problems, she rolled past with a plate stacked with an obscene amount of fried food. FML

well, most obesity issues are the result of an unhealthy lifestyle

Because one meal makes someone obese?

As someone with a dead thyroid and cushings disease (pituitary tumor that causes my body to make too much steroid) I've struggled with my weight for years. I understand the health struggles, but it makes me so mad when I see people making excuses for their unhealthy choices. If you have all the tools in front of you to be healthy without obstacles like this, then stop making excuses and just admit you are responsible for your choices. Honestly I'm jealous of the people that get fat from eating like that because it's something that can be easily fixed by choice. I wish people would just take advantage of all the things in front of them that some of us don't have. If anything OP, it was still good for you to try to explain it to your son that some people have difficulties. Because some on us do, and others just make bad choices.

Good intentions, but yeah, some people put themselves in that place. And apparently fatphobia is a thing...

It would have made more sense to tell him not to be rude to her for the simple fact that she's a person than not to be rude because it might not "be her fault". Regardless of whether the obesity was through her own gluttony or a medical condition, no stranger has a right to make sweeping judgements. Most people are obese through their own eating habits, it doesnt make them anymore worthy of riddicule

Well at least you're teaching him it's wrong to judge others, it's good that he knows what's healthy for him and that's the important thing here

Honestly...ydi for buying into the "conditions" excuses...

You still did the right thing by teaching him not to point at people and judge them. Maybe use this as a lesson for healthy eating as well.

You should instead have lectured him that it was impolite and rude to loudly talk about someone. At least he understands health though!

Maybe you should just lecture him about minding his own business.

Totally not your fault! For all you knew she could've had a condition.
