as said from a skit from family guy "Men! we don't know what we did"
If she thinks her birthday is ruined by something this trivial, she is obviously high drama. You got her a present, and put at least some thought into it. That's a sweet gesture, and if she can't appreciate it (and you) you need to find someone who does. If my boyfriend ever bought me the same thing as my mom did, I would laugh and thank them both for their gift. I would also probably tease both you and my mom about this for the rest of your lives, though. Seriously, find a less dramatic girlfriend.
Nothing there says it was his GF that called birthday ruined. It could have been some drunk uncle or something.

Are you sure that they're just not having a laugh? I really don't see why your girlfriend would be angry about it
How old is your girlfriend? It isn't the end of the world, just take it back and get something different. At least you were thoughtful enough to get her a gift that clearly suited her, as her mother also got it for her
Oh man, this happened to me last Christmas! I bought what I thought was a really personal, thoughtful gift for my boyfriend, and his mom gave him the same thing :( Sorry OP.
why would it be your fault, you knew your girlfriend enough to be on the same level as her mom I don't see a problem
I did that once. I went to a birthday party when I was in middle school, and I got the birthday girl the same thing her mother did: the (then) new Hillary Duff album. I was mortified, but she was super cool about it. She liked the first copy she opened, and told me, "Now I have a copy for at home, and one to keep in mom's car!" I'm sorry things didn't go so well for you, OP. And I hope you kept the receipt.

I don't know why she's pissed. You know her as well as her own mother!
Calling the birthday ruined over this sound very dramatic.
