I love you, human

Today, I got a new cat. He's outrageously clingy. Like, "extremely unhealthy obsession with me" clingy. I just wanted an emotional support animal, but it looks like I have become an emotional support animal instead. I feel terrible for trying to get him to not want to be with me all the time. FML

Don’t have cats if you don’t want them around. You sound like a horrible owner. My cats want to be around me, and sometimes it gets annoying, but them have feelings and insecurities just like you, and the more you comfort them, and bond, the more they’re reciprocate. Cats aren’t as independent as I originally thought them to be. One cat is rescued from almost imminent death by starving is very attached to me and will be waiting when I get home from work. But that’s it’s way of thanking me for delivering it from a horrible situation. I feel blessed and animal trusted me enough to form that bond. Want an animal that won’t bother you? Get a fish, or a slug, but don’t get a cat and not expect to have to bond with it where you get all the pros without the cons. Frankly, eff that cats life. That means you’re likely to neglect and if it gets out, it definitely won’t come back when you call. Edit, typos due too crappy predictive text system on iphone

Have you considered getting a second cat? I know, sounds nuts but it gives kitty company, comfort and distraction. He'll probably settle down once he's comfy in his new home though. It's all strange places and smells and you're the only thing he's sure of right now so the clingy is understandable. Be patient and see if he grows out of it in a few weeks, if not, you might want to look at getting him a cuddle buddy.

There are videos on YouTube on how to up your cat's confidence. They could help a lot, and nobody in the video is going to tell you that you're a bad owner. You're just an overwhelmed owner with an underconfident cat.
