I'm right here

Today, after applying for a promotion to a position which I've been working my ass off for two years to get, my managers thought it would be appropriate to discuss other applicants in front of me, even asking me to compare my resume with theirs to see the "caliber" of what I'm up against. FML

Very unprofessional of them. Details of other applicants should really be confidential. Anyway, good luck on getting your new job. However... something unfortunate could happen to the other resumes... >:)

Hopefully you have a kick ass resume..

It's possible that they're required by company policy to create a public job opening when a promotion opens up. You should be glad you got these kernels of information, especially if it's supposed to be confidential. Now you have an idea what you need to do, so stop bitching, work hard, and get that promotion. Use their lack of professional courtesy to your advantage.

It's a great opportunity that is being offered. Yet you are choosing to whine about it and find a reason while this is an insult towards you. For all who are remarking about this being illegal in the US; it's not. There is absolutely no reason why the resumes can't be shared with whomever the company wants; be that other employees, other applicants or anyone walking down the street. It's not legally confidential, even if you prefer it to be. OP this isn't an FML. The FML here is: Today I was given an opportunity at work to review my competition for a job promotion, which is probably because I'm under qualified and my boss was giving me a chance to see this for myself, but instead I bitched about it. Sounds like a wonderful place to work. Are they still taking applications?

They do it to get you to come to the table with more skills, especially if you are going into a competitive field like sales. They want to see how you react to competition.

You know what else is unprofessional? Spelling 'definitely' like you just did.

I ******* lost it at "the caliber of what I'm up against". As if the scale is monumental and/or about whatever ninja warrior/Aztec god you're up against. LOL.
