Independance day

Today, a crying kid was brought to my attention by a customer. He was so upset from losing his mom that he couldn't say his or his mom's name. I took him around the store asking him to point out his mom. Once we'd found her she told me, "I was hiding from my kid to test his independence." FML

although the way she went about it was ****** up, i get the point she was trying to make. next time, she shouldve tried somewhere her child couldnt be easily picked up by kidnappers and molesters etc.. also how old is this kid? because if he was like 10ish i think thats a little much for him to be freaking out like that. i got lost in the mall when i was under 5 and knew exactly what to do.

I don't understand this AT all? If he was a young child, say 4-6/7 then it's understandable if he got upset about being lost. If he is in that age range, then his mother needs a slap for "testing" her childs independence when they are MEANT to be dependent at that age, and for not drumming into him the appropriate "Find security" tactic. HOWEVER if he was older, such as the 8/9-11 age range then she still deserves a slap for still not having drummed into him to find a store member/security AND for still using a really stupid way to test his independence - Try asking him to make his own lunch or a hot drink first before abandoning him to the big wide world?.... A child should not be made independent at tender ages, rather nurtured until they find their feet themselves. That said, mollycoddling really pees me off, there's a fine line and some people seem to get confused between nurtured/mollycoddled.

It's not your FML! it's the poor kids. Screw that asshole of a ****.

OP, don't feel guilty; you did exactly what you should have done. The mom is the messed up one and the kid is the one who should be posting here, years from now when he finally deals with his traumatic childhood. :P
