Why play games? Why didn't you just admit that you liked it and see if they had suggestions to make it better? It's not like it's permanent so the worst that would happen is they think you need help figuring out a good look.
I'm ashamed to say something very similar has happened to me
I once dyed my hair a different shade and I looked so different, some people like family members didn't like it but I didn't care what they thought, I still tried to rocked it and got compliments, and you shouldn't have come up with that lame excuse, what kind of friends do you have to put down like that?
As cliche as it may sound, I've always found the best hair colors to be ones that someone wears with confidence. If you act ashamed, people will assume that even you don't like how you look. If you say "**** them" and decide to rock the color that *you* like, that attitude shines through and people will pick up on it and have a more positive view. Look your friends dead in the eye and say that you like how your hair looks, and dare them to bring you down!
I bet you looked great! (They were probably jealous that you could work whatever color you chose.)
my ex died her hair blue for some reason and by the next day if even that it had washed out or whatever and became green but whether blue or green when we tried to give her trouble she held her head high and wore it and didn't let anyone say anything that bothered her and that's how you should no matter what color cause you can just say your expressing yourself and dont let anyone make you feel bad about that friend or otherwise

You shouldn't let your friends opinion change how you initially felt about your hair. You loved it and if your friends don't, they suck..not you. I'm sure your hair color rocks! Own it.
It could be the sudden change or your hair, not the actual look of your hair
