Today, I held a presentation about my masters thesis. Turns out, my professor never ever actually read the drafts I'd given him, but decided to rip me to pieces in front of everyone, saying that the topic isn't worth researching. I've been working on it for six months. FML

That does not seem very considerate or professional of your professor, file a formal complaint ! >:O

You should have replied back with "Well it would have helped if you had been doing your job, why didn't you say something back when I showed you the drafts?" you need to stand up for yourself OP, because no one else will.

Mutt man, who cares if shannon is 14, she's right.. That's college op, get over it... Pick a topic that matters next time..

haha. This probably had less to do with anything academic and more to do with you being a deuche.

That wasn't research he tore up, it was just a Ransom note. Next time either kidnap the kid He really cares about or suck it up and write an Actual paper. Be an adult, for God's sake.

You need to defend your thesis. I attended a conference where a young PhD researcher presented her work. At the end, someone stood up at slated it in every way possible. The presenter held her ground, defended her work, and left with her head held high and much respect. OP, your supervisor was attempting to teach you an important lesson. Learn from it.

If you want to teach your kid that he should look both ways before crossing the road, you let him do just that, and then tell him "well I hope you learned from your mistake, young man" after he's dead. That's if you think like #23 and possibly this (probably half-senile) professor. If you're relatively reasonable and/or semi-competent, you tell your student *beforehand*, or let him crash during a test presentation... So he doesn't get crushed when it's time for the real thing. Leaving your student completely unprepared and waiting for the actual thesis to do it... This is absolutely retarded.

OP should have been prepared for criticism; it is one if the most important things for the presentation. They tell you in advance! I gave the example of the conference as it is relevant... Your example, however, was just stupid.

You probably shouldn't have titled your thesis, "Ethical, Moral, and Cultural Considerations of Dora versus Diego: Are Two Cartoons With Hispanic Main Characters Really Necessary, Or Should There Just Be One? And What Is Up With That ******* Talking Monkey?" Live and learn.

I thought the title was brilliant, just saying.

is it possible? Can it be? DocBastard began a sentence with an "and".

Yes, it appears I did. Fortunately, starting a sentence with a conjunction is not, nor has ever been, grammatically incorrect. It was discouraged in the 19th-20th centuries, but it is still correct. Refer to Dictionary of Modern American Usage by Bryan A. Garner and The Cambridge Guide to English Usage by Pam Peters for confirmation. *ducks to avoid the rush of FMLers running to the bookstore*

What? Someone on FML check their facts instead of assuming it to be true? Unheard of!

YDI for picking a shitty topic, for wasting your time on research for a shitty topic, for even BEING a student, for being too meek to stand up for yourself, and for being a female and attending any grad school that isn't culinary in nature. My sammich isn't going to make itself.

Welcome to the world of work. If you end up working for a corporation (or any business size I guess), you can expect something similar to happen every now and then. Get the right boss and the public humiliation may happen daily.

its his fault if he doesn't like the topic. he had every opportunity to look at your drafts for six months. if he doesn't accept the work I would take it to the dean and explain how your professor isn't doing the job he is being paid to do. he deserves to be fired.

good one put it back on the professor for collecting a paycheck but not doing the work

I agree with the previous comments about defending your thesis, and I would personally see if I could meet with my professor and talk it over. If you honestly believe he hasn't been doing his job, I'm not sure if a formal complaint would help, but you might be able to swap mentors to someone who is more likely to help you out. That being said, I do wonder why you've not been to his office or asked specific questions with regard to your work. And for those of you that say it's the professor's fault, etc etc etc: this person is in graduate school. They have a mentor for a reason. Use the mentor. And telling your professor to **** off is probably going to leave you without the possibility of earning a masters. PS: to the 14 year old who apparently knows everything about college: college and GRAD SCHOOL are two totally different things. Considering you've never been to either, perhaps you should sit this argument out.

Shut up little one. I've done work on thesis before and I'm wondering what your field is. How the hell did it get so far unnoticed? I work with my prof on it weekly...
