poobear - actually no, it's not always something a dermatologist can easily fix. It took me YEARS to finally get rid of my acne. I tried three kinds of antibiotics, all of which my body became immune to, so they stopped working. I tried a version of the pill designed specifically to help with acne, but it didn't work and gave me migraines. The only thing that worked was taking a nine-month course of a ridiculously strong drug (roaccutane) that gave me constant nose-bleeds, dry lips, and messed up my brain chemistry so badly that I became suicidal. It's such a dangerous drug that they monitor you incredibly closely, and will often refuse to give it to people because of the side-effects. It's so potent that there are warnings all over the packaging that it will damage unborn babies if you're pregnant. My skin is lovely and clear now, but I'm having to pick up the pieces of it causing me to become so depressed. The saddest thing of all? Once you come off it, there's a chance you might relapse and it will have all been for nothing. If you have bad acne, there are actually very few options. Have some compassion, and don't be so quick to judge things that you evidently know nothing about. I feel really sorry for the OP's girlfriend, and for any girls or guys with acne who might come into contact with some of the commenters here.

megs8907 - ironically, I just posted above you to say I actually have lovely skin now. :) I'm offended by the "eww's" not just because I used to have acne, but on behalf of everyone who does or has ever had. The ignorance and thoughtlessness of so many of the commenters here appalls me. If you can't look past something like acne, what kind of person are you? How superficial people are these days! Even when I had bad acne, I had a handsome, intelligent boyfriend who - get this - didn't mind, because he liked who I was, and found me attractive regardless. You can go "eww" all you like, but you're relegating yourself to a level where you'll never properly understand what it is to see people past their exteriors. What a cold, lifeless world that must be. Full of "hot" people, probably, but youth and beauty fade.
