Not a geography major

Today, I had to show my daughter where the USA is on a map. She's 17, and we live in the USA. FML

One can only hope she was joking.

You would be surprised at how many kids actually don't know this stuff then.

No offense to you, OP, but Bush should have never passed the "No Kid Left Behind" law. Kids pass each class/grade so they aren't 20-years-old and finally graduating high school. I see why my sister, who teaches elementary grades, brings up how awful this law is.

Government should have as little as possible to do with education. They couldn't organize a piss up in a brewery.

The biggest issue with that law is the dumbing down of school instruction to help slow learners keep up. It ***** over fast learning students who want to advance.

Someone should give her The Teenage Liberation Handbook: How to Quit School and Get a Real Life and Education, by Grace Llewellyn..

Can't imagine when she start lookin for India she will be second to none nastradomaus

Enter the world of the magnet school: a publicly funded institution, with academic entry requirements.

The federal government has been meddling in state and local education for some time, even before the "No Child Left Behind Act." There was a civil suit several decades ago (I don't remember exactly how many) in which a guy sued his local public school system because they allowed him to graduate to the next grade every year and gave him his diploma, even though he couldn't even read or write. And thus standardized testing was born!

Yeah, because Common Core is sooo much better. Where 1+1=3 but it's ok as long as you can give a bullshit reason why you got that answer.

and... its official. Technology is destroying our youth. Keep educating your kids every chance you get OP!! schools nowadays are about busy work and not education.

Crap like this makes me cringe. Makes my country and generation look bad.

I'm 15 and ik were USA is on the map Ik Big deal right!!! What I'm saying is technology isn't destroying all people I can tell u were most places are cough cough thanks FIFA

Technology has nothing to do with it, if anything technology should make them smarter, we have a great deal of information availible to us within a few clicks, yet some people choose not to learn. It's pathetic that we have so much available to us and yet some people can't even point to their own country on a map

#45 I completely agree. It's sickening. Most people - especially teens - use technology only for facebook or instagram, or some other social media. They'll spend 3 hours straight looking through their newsfeed and won't even take ten minutes to look something up on Google. Social networking is great, but there needs to be a balance between that and actual productive activities online.

I love how everyone on this thread thinks they're a professional. One generalisation after another.

#20.. Not just "look" bad... just think of the consequences. You guys have drones..

77, a professional what? A business professional? Your comment makes no sense.

There comes a time in every parents life when all they can think is, "My child... Is an idiot." I know this because my parents told me so lol. They were very concerned about me when I was a toddler but I turned out okay (I think.)

Now just imagine how well you'd be doing if you took that crayon out of your nose.

Big stick and an attitude. The best teacher. If you don't know where the USA is and you live there at 17, you have a problem. I'm from Ireland. I knew where the US was when I was 12. If I was a slow learner I got the Leather. I got it because I was lazy, not stupid. I'm not advocating corporal punishment, but come on. You live here.

#18, when I was a kid, I thought Ireland was in Indiana, the capital was South Bend and why are American football teams playing against a country we are apparently at war with?

But the problem is now days kids have more rights than parents do. You can't give your kid a smack on the butt any more, it's considered "child abuse". That's why I believe that kids now days are more self centered, rude and arrogant than when I was a youngen. I got the belt over the bum when I was little, and there is nothing wrong with me.

#78 agreed; i got belted as a kid on a daily basis, but because i deserved them all. If it wasnt for the way i was raised, i would totally be a stray or possibly even dead or jail with the mentality ive had. And they wonder why the generations get worse and worse as time goes by..

emirie 21

It might be time to switch schools. Makes me wonder where your tax money is going..

Aussieinusa 5

In 2012 only 2% was spent on education, 20%+ on defense. Says a lot doesn't it.

Epikouros 31

#80 That's 2% too much. The federal government isn't supposed to spend anything on education according to the US constitution. That's up to states and school districts.

Aussieinusa 5

Another fun fact: 21% was spent on welfare in 2012.

Spider_Web 11

@134, and they're not supposed to pass medical care laws, gun laws, or welfare by the Constitution.

Suaria 38

Fun fact: The Founding Fathers thought the Constitution would only last a short time and not 200+ years. It was really a replacement of the Articles of Confederation which was seen not to work because of Shay's Rebellion. Also, people thought because of Shay's Rebellion there would be a "mob rule" within America.
