politeness comes and bites u in the ass.
No wonder you get along well, you're afraid to do anything. Good relationships include honest communication. If he had been home with the music blaring for six hours--being a dick--you would have been okay with that?
If you would really get along well, you could've just asked him to turn it down. This is not what I would call getting along, so YDI for not speaking up for yourself.
How does one "forget" to notice music at full volume while leaving?
I know you don't want to rock the boat but there's nothing wrong with going to your roomie and asking politely if s/he'll turn the music down. And if you see he left without turning it off--how do you "forget" to turn off blasting music?--you can turn it off yourself. YDI for not at least trying to get some relief while you were studying.

Why didn't you just ask him to turn off the music? If you guys were friends I'm sure he wouldn't mind.
While I understand your mindset for putting up with the loud music, it couldn't have hurt to ask him to turn it down, considering the two of you get along well. Then you might've realized that he wasn't home 6 hours ago, so YDI.
