I can completely understand the whole not asking to turn it down aspect, because I am in a very similar boat. People think it's easy to go in and ask for them to turn it down, but when you get along well with them, and you keep having to tell them to turn it down, or if they're in a bad mood, it can easily turn into an argument, and risking an argument with a flatmate is never a good idea. The tension is just not worth it. I usually let my flatmate just get on with his random ourbursts of loud music too. I might have gone and asked him to turn it down if I wanted to knuckle down and do some serious work tho. Asking at the right times is key I suppose. You don't want to dampen their fun, but at the same time, you gotta work too.
If the two of you get along, you should have told him to turn it down or wear headphones instead. I am sure he would be considerate and do as requested.
You can't be that close if you didn't feel comfortable asking him to turn it down. I personally would have left to the library, or a coffee shop of possible.
I actually find it really hard to study without loud music. I wonder if OP's friend is the same? If so, that could explain why OP was so considerate...but still, hope it wasn't too much of a problem! Good luck with your exam!
How do you put up with loud music for six hours?? You must have the patience of a saint
You are as patient as a saint! I would have lost it after an hour tops.
At least it wasn't rapping about bitches, money, and using the n-word consistently for the 6 hours, right?

Why didn't you just ask him to turn off the music? If you guys were friends I'm sure he wouldn't mind.
While I understand your mindset for putting up with the loud music, it couldn't have hurt to ask him to turn it down, considering the two of you get along well. Then you might've realized that he wasn't home 6 hours ago, so YDI.
