Priorities

Today, I called my dad to ask why my university tuition had not been paid. He said that my school was "too expensive" and he "couldn't afford it." He then asked me if I would take in his mail while he was away. He was taking his new wife to Hawaii; apparently it's beautiful this time of year. FML

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. It's the same argument every two posts! Do you REALLY THINK that it's SO EASY to pay for college yourself, in THIS economy? Are you REALLY?! THAT?! SLOW?! In regards to the earlier comment about college isn't for everyone, damn straight - it's not for people who think it's so easy to do things totally by yourself! Does that make you a moocher? No! You have to find a BALANCE - which sometimes includes your parents helping you out with college. If you're one of the lucky few who found a decent job in this economy, well Effing good for you - go brag about it to someone who gives a damn...or else quit and give it to someone decent enough to deserve it. As for the OP - Damn...that DOES suck. When you find a way out of this (WHEN, not IF, because anyone who cares this much about college definitely has what it takes to make it), move on, and don't look back at him, and when he blows all his money on his new wife, let 'em starve. Good luck.

you are a moron. The OP isn't being selfish just because his dad was paying the tuition bill and then decided not to. its already october, so wtf is the OP going to do now for money? he might even get kicked out of college. his dad screwed him over. college tuition isn't "tee hee okay daddy i'll get a part time job at starbucks to pay my tuition!" no kid, it doesn't work that way. I really hate when high schoolers try to give advice to older people when they have no clue what they're talking about.

Glad to see your father's priorities are straight. However, you can always get a f/t job or get some loans for your schooling payments. You're in college now. Time to be a big boy.

I agree. Get out a loan. It's not just his responsibility.

getting a loan (or a job) for up to $50,000 a year is easier said than done

If the college costs $50,000 a year, I strongly suggest switching. Either way, that's a shit load more money than a Hawaii vacation.

FYL definitely but could people learn how to use quotations marks correctly?

Figure out if you can cover tuition with a combination of student loans and a job. If you're an undergraduate, you should definitely be able to work 20-30 hours a week and still have plenty of time to get your schoolwork done. People have been known to work 40-hour weeks and still ace their classes. Loans could be a bit harder to obtain. If you can't raise the money on your own, transfer to a cheaper school. As for your dad, looks like it's time you went out on your own. Tell him he can take his money and his mail and shove them up his ass. If you really wish to spite him, you could "misplace" a few of his bills that come in while he's away.

why dont you grow up and take care of your own schooling?

What really bothers me about these comment is how they ignore the point.

FYL for what your dad did, but YDI. Get a job and pay for it yourself before you can complain that life isn't fair. It's not his education, it's not his responsibility. Yes, for him to say he doesn't have the money then go and spend money in the same sentence is BS, but like I said, you can get a job and work for your education if it's that important to you.

Yeah he totally can get a job that'll get him enough money in no time

you ******* tell your dad that you get to choose his nursing home and he should pay for college or ELSE he will be in a ******* hell hole (then put him in one anyway because he is a douche)

flying to hawaii is way cheaper than college, its not really an either or thing

actually a trip from Canada to Hawaii can equal a semester's tuition

Pro Tip: Kill him and get his money sooner

In Canada, we are fortunate in that the government subsides our tutition and then lends us some addition money, OSAP since he is in Ontario, (depending on our income + parents' if we live with them) if need be. Considering it is Oct., you must have 1) Have your fees deferred because you are getting OSAP (This is what most of us do, including myself atm) or 2) Your father payed the min. amount required for you to not get kicked out. So even though you got screwed over by your dad, its not so bad in that you can still go to the bank after you get a job and get a line of credit + a credit card if need be to pay it off. Btw, tutition for a year of a regulated program at U of Toronto without res., meal plan, or books and if you are a Canadian student is about $6000ish ($500 per 0.5 credit + some crap fees for stuff half of us don't use which you can opt out some). Deregulated programs add about $4000ish more for a final sum of $10,000ish. It is not as bad as the prices in other places but it is not exactly pocket change for a student either. Good Luck.
