Quack science

By RyanJarmanForPresident - This FML is from back in 2012 but it's good stuff - United States

Today, I caught my teenage daughter smoking, and tried calmly explaining to her that it's quite bad for her health. She replied with, "It doesn't harm you if you're under 20." FML

I don't see how anyone can enjoy or think that putting a dried, flammable, poisonous stick of burning plant up to their lips and breathing in the fumes and smoke is a good/attractive thing.

Yeah, and guns don't harm you if you're under 18!

Well they probably wanted to try it and once they did the nicotine made them crave more and more.

It's possible, but I doubt one cigarette could do that.

It can and it does... at least in the people I've known around me. I can't speak for the general population.

It's not the plant. It's all those chemicals that the companies put in those shit cigs that really messes people up. But yeah I totally agree with you. My brother smokes and I don't understand why anyone really would do it.

Your teenage daughter is dumb as rocks, maybe you should nick name her "rocks"

23 - How long did it take you to come up with that one?

No need to basalt him. Of quartz, his joke wasn't very refined, but we shouldn't take it for granite.

I dont want to live on this planet anymore.

What the hell does "people like you" mean.It was a joke that comes from a meme that is quite popular and is used whenever someone does and/or says something outrageous. Thank you for being a buzzkill.

SenselessPattern 12

130 Wrong! It comes from the stupid, overused joke pool where originality is blasphemy to its user(s).

142- So the same place the first comment came from since ive seen it used more than mine. Or the comment about face palming. Maybe i shouldve put Lol since you are all taking it entirely too seriously and I really dont understand why. If you dont like my comment thumb it down and be on your way.

Actually the younger a person starts smoking the more harm it causes. Lungs apparently are not quite fully developed that young.,,or something like that. It's bad either way.

Sadly, in a way, she has a point. Of course, she is actually harming herself, but it won't be for many years down the road that she will feel the consequences of that damage. Too bad smoking doesn't kill of people before they reach child-bearing years -- evolution could have solved the problem in a few generations.

That's a bit harsh. We all die of something eventually, why should people pay the price for their own life choices by death? A lot of the people on this planet would die, and a lot of others would never have been born. If it's to teach people a lesson for choices that damage the body, there are millions of other things in our day to day life that increase chances of bad things, such as cancer happening to us later on. Doesn't mean we all should die over it, just to learn not to do something that might not even kill us in the end. Unless this was all a big joke and I missed it, in which case I need my dunce hat.

#38, Et tu, Brute? You need to don that conical cap. Don't you recognize hyperbole when you see it?

I wouldn't notice hyperbole if it came up, smacked me in the face, and then proceeded to bounce all round my house on a pogo-stick in a tutu singing bohemian rhapsody.

Depends how old she is. If she's like 14 or something, while it won't kill her for a while, she could easily develop respiratory problems in a few years.

Holy shit perdix AND pleonasm were serious there for a second! Get to the bomb shelter women and children first!

tsent8 15

Doc bastard if you get serious too oh. god I don't even want to think about it.

Hope for your sake she's a adopted child.

I don't know why people post these things about their kids. They raised them... Or attempted to.

tenfiftynine 12

Well yea but the parents may raise them not to smoke, but the daughter may not have payed attention in school, or she could have been pressured.

Not enough palms in which to face...

Reminds me of a time in high school when a tiny girl I knew told me she could never get pregnant because she was too small. Then came child one, two, and three all under the age of 20.

Psycho_Babydoll 26

Let's hope OP's daughter realises she can still get pregnant if she's under 20. (spoiler: she probably doesn't)

OhDearBetrayal 25

As a tiny girl myself, I don't think she meant that she was infertile. She probably meant that she wouldn't let herself become pregnant because of her size but then once it actually happened she probably came to terms with the fact that tiny people can have healthy pregnancies too.

weasel123 9

My sister thought she couldn't get pregnant because she had an irregular period. She got pregnant at age 16... People are dumb.

itsBEEarOHseekay 12

128...No. She meant her body was too tiny to be able to carry a baby so it just wouldn't get pregnant. I don't understand why you thought you knew what she meant better than I did..

With teens, a lot of them do it to make friends. Smoking bonds, after all. Also, when their friends start smoking and they get offered a cigarette, why say no?
