Today, my family’s usual Sunday dinner turned into a shouting match over politics. My uncle called me a “brainwashed socialist,” my cousin accused me of being a “capitalist pig,” and my grandma just sat there eating pie, which made me want to call her a "fence-sitting centrist", which is when I realized that maybe we shouldn't ever talk about politics again. It sounds like your grandmother has great wisdom. Many should follow her lead and leave behind the sensationalism of extreemism.

It's a very old, wise saying, "Don't talk about religion or politics." Heck, in some cities, don't talk about sports! Looking at you, Philadelphia. ;)

Calm discussions about politics can occur. My family does it and we don't agree on many topics. The thing is to 1) understand there will be differences. 2) Don't force your OPINION on others. 3) discuss issues 4) discuss facts 5) avoid insulting individuals (either family or politicians) 6) separate emotion. 7) understand party platform and individual platform. and most importantly, look foe common ground. We agree on many more things than the news media wants you to believe. Sensationalism sells. it drives ad revenue.

The only reason my mother and I still have a relationship is because we agreed never to discuss politics again. People *believe* in politics which is what makes it as much of a minefield as religion. Sometimes the only thing you can do is just remove the topic entirely for the sake of the relationship.
