It wasn't even a question of mistaking an eighteen-year-old for a thirty-two-year-old. In order to have an outstanding warrant from 1979, the guy would have to be in his late forties or older. It's not like he committed crimes as a newborn.
I think OP needs to clarify whether or not he was resisting arrest and what the outstanding warrants were for. Cops (even the bad ones) don't beat the crap out of people who are co-operating - too many video cameras around these days. My guess is that OP looks older than his age and decided to be a dick about it.
