I think it showed integrity that OP gave back the present - They were not obligated to do so, but it was the right thing to do under the circumstances. A gift, especially a very valuable gift conveys an expectation of reciprocity - Not necessarily a sexual encounter but it still conveys some degree of obligation. Returning the gift when that's unwanted is wise... We don't know if OP and the person interested in a romantic relationship were a victim of miscommunication or just different expectations from the relationship. It's unfortunate that wasn't clear before the gift incident.
