no harm no foul... he was exactly right.. She wont know!!! at least his friend wasn't a dude, that would have made it a little awkward with a deep voice on the other end

^ So... it's awkward if there is a guy's voice on the phone, but not awkward that it was a devastated and sobbing female friend? Last time I checked, crying was a turn off.
