It's because those belief systems date back to ridiculous means to explain things that were not understood, and instead of opening their mind to truths, they blindly follow (or "have faith") in ancient writings that just don't fit into what we know now as truth. Wow, some of the comments I'm seeing on here... Guys, just because OP's grandmother was both a bigoted bitch and a Christian does not mean the two are related. Sure, there are a bunch of bigot Christians out there, but there are also extremist atheists(like the ones you see on the Internet hiding behind anonymity), extremist Muslims, extremist Jews, extremist Hindus, even extremist Buddhists. However, the vast majority or each of these belief systems are nice, level headed people. Tl;Dr: having a religion doesn't automatically mean you're a bigoted asshole, and being atheist doesn't mean you're nice or intellectually free. Religion (or lack of one) has nothing to to with intelligence or tolerance.
