Today, I saw my car being broken into on the street below my apartment. Too scared to stop them myself, I called the police. Before I could even tell them what was going on, they put me on hold. It was a good 5 minutes before I realized they'd hung up on me. FML

Really? I'm at a loss for words on this one

This is really upsetting. You could have been in a life threatening situation. A life may have been lost due to the stupidity of people we are supposed to rely on

Should've taken it into your own hands OP, tons of witnesses out there.

It's ok I called the police when my apartment got broken into when I wasn't home. It took them seven hours to get there and when they got there they were like, "Well call us if you hear anything" and they left. Those people stole $4000 in electronics from my apartment... I even had the car type and they said they would look into it and I should get a call in a few days. That was over a year ago.

When my apartment was broken into the police got there pretty quickly but did nothing. They said that I left the front door open when the back window was clearly broken. I showed them a can of pop and a kitchen knife that the burglar had touched but they didn't dust for prints. When a detective called a few days later to follow up he was appalled that they basically did nothing.

The police don't just 'dust for prints.' Thats a fairly costly process that, like it or not, isn't going to be used in the majority of cases. In addition, the officer only needs to establish the crime scene, secure it, and write a report. From there a detective can be called in to do a more detailed report/investigation, but the two officers don't have the time to spend hours on one instance of crime.

Looks like your car was meant to be broken into or the police are just useless

That's horrible. Make sure you file a complaint.

I don't know if this would work in your case, but sue the dispatchers? Or at least file a complaint. If this was something more serious and life threatening, and they just hung up, it would be all over the news.

Did they get anything from the car? You shoulda thrown something out the window (tv, toaster, shoes)

Just call them and tell them they don't have to come by anymore because you already killed the thief. They'll be there before you know it!

Op, maybe you should arm yourself with a firearm. Next time something happens you can either protect your property or defend yourself if you have to. The police can't be everywhere and don't tell me that budget cuts are responsible for their not being enough police.

#27 > Are you for real? So your response to your car being broken into would be to go Dirty Harry on the thieves? Yeah right. You clearly have no idea what it means to shoot another human being. Even if the intention is only to scare them away, chances are they'd have guns too and what would happen then? A cross fire in the streets where OP would probably end dead or badly injured for trying to save his car? This happens way too often. What happened sucked but OP took the right decision by staying safe and out of the way. No property is worth dying for.

I would agree with you but often just the showing of a fire arm is enough to scare them away. and if the robbers had guns they'd probably be at a bank not some one's xar.
