Clearly the felt it was better to have you move on now before they became too reliant on you and faced the risk of you with them at a less opportune time for them. With the proper severance package and references move on Their decision is actually sound for both you and them

I hate when employers just assume that. If there was a better job available in the first place, it would have been my first choice, however a job is a job and I'll take anything I can get. Hopefully they'll understand and let you back on the position, OP! Job searching is rough....

They should at least help you find a new job; it's not like you did anything wrong or that they themselves are in trouble or going out of business.
