I never get the fans of anything who believe that their significant others must like the same things they do. It can be helpful in a relationship, but by no means necessary. My guess is that he wouldn't have been willing to put in the same time for something you were interested in.
There is a difference between not liking something your significant other likes and being a bitch about it. You say he broke up with you over you not taking a serious interest, probably more likely you were being rude while he was trying to enjoy what he loved. I know your type.

Did you communicate to him you hate them? seems you're better off without him if its that critical to him. I'm a Huge star wars fan and agree you should have some likes and passions in common but it doesn't Have to be anything specific.
The fact that he has interests different than yours is not bad. But, the fact that he insists you adopt his interests is a deal-breaker. That's intolerable! His dumping of you just saved you from doing what you should have done anyways.
