Today, I recently had open heart surgery and I'm prohibited from pushing, pulling, or lifting anything. My wife goes ahead of me to open doors, carry things from the store, and open my car door. Yes, I do get many mean, judgmental glares. FML

There is no shame in following the doctor's orders and taking care of yourself. Pay no mind to the judgments of the ignorant. Best wishes for a fast and uncomplicated recovery!

You should slip her a few bucks each time. That'll confuse the judgmental *****.

Where I work, we say that you should only lift up to 2 kg in each hand the first 6-8 weeks. Other than that it is “do what you can, without pain or discomfort”… It seems extreme for your wife to open doors for you, but what do I know..

Maybe those doors are the kind we have at the office, which were tightened because our boss tought them "too slack". You should see the biceps we have on our door-opening arm.

Given the shitte women rights situation in the US i'm not wondering about that. I mean...if you're from the US. In every case: ignore it and follow your docs orders, they are important. Get better soon! :)

Carry a cane (even if you don’t need it). Should stop some of the looks.

we had similar reactions when my husband threw his back out. I normally lift all day at work anyways so it's no problem but the death stares we would get when I put a huge box of a bookshelf in our car and driving was ridiculous. it's looked as blasphemy if a female drives or does anything for herself in the small Midwestern town we moved to. they'll just have to get over it. it's 2022 for God's sake.
