Shoulda put a ring on it. To those who think marriage "ain't nothin' but a piece of paper," here's one way it might have given the guy some visitation rights with his step-daughter.
"Ex" doesn't mean she's not his ex*wife*. "Ex-stepfather" sounds like they were married. It's not like divorce doesn't exist and I'm quite unsure if there are visitation rights for step-parents - certainly depends on where he's from. Furthermore it's not like you can't meet the kid if all parties agree, which it seems they don't - likely the ex or the kid. Then he can do little and of course he's sad. But a snarky remark is easier than thinking about that, I guess :)
