So what exactly happened to what at intended to be purchased?
Employee of the month.
I used to work in a supermarket and had a couple of customers like that... It sucks but you just have to bite your tounge and take the customers shit!!!
Challenge accepted! I'm sure there are many ways he could be made to pay.
Didn't the alarm go off?
Not everywhere has alarms, and even the places that do people can usually just keep walking and get away with it as most places also don't allow staff to go after shoplifters... it's really nothing more than a scare tactic but most people determined to steal will do so anyway especially if they were already bold enough to tell an employee they were going to. So even if they had one and it went off it doesn't mean anything.
in the states we call that shoplifting
Customers are just stupid and they will pull shit like this from time to time. It happened at my last job a few times, I've seen it happen at other stores while I've been shopping. Sucks but it's part of dealing with the public. It's not right, but it happens, not worth stressing over it.
Just to make this clear for me - he actually walked off with stuff he did not pay for? Uhm, were exactly is the difference to "stealing" here? And why the hell am I still paying for anything? And why is he considered a "customer" when he is not paying?
Could that be referred to as "Low Level Looting."
I really despise that slogan. "The customer is always right". A lot of the times the rude obnoxious ones get away with things because of that stupid idea businesses have about customers coming first. I didn't know theft was also part of the policy.

Guess who's getting free groceries tonight!
I'd say call your manager or maybe cops, even though he's long gone
