Today, after 8 months of being belittled and treated like trash at my job as a prep cook in a high-end kitchen, I stood up for myself to the line cooks. Not only did everyone laugh at me, I got fired for causing a scene during service and insubordination. FML

That's the biz. Kitchen hierarchy is a bitch. Prep your ass off, keep your eyes open, find the one cook who is willing to teach (every restaurant has one) and don't let your bosses forget that you wanna move up. It also helps to be a hard ass. Good luck in the next restaurant

Although, nobody should be absolutely shitted on. You treat the dishwasher like shit? You have no clean plates to sell your food. Prep cooks? You're scrambling to have yourself set and 86ing everything. Bottom line, don't treat your coworkers like shit no matter their position. But, do give them shit. You'll most likely never work in a restaurant where there isn't a little screaming and belittling. It just shouldn't take away from productivity

I've worked in the restaurant business a while as a server, and I've always watched how the cooks treat each other. It's a really interesting, aggressive dynamic that can sometimes be heart warming but is far more frequently just downright cruel. Definitely made me not want to be a chef.
